Algar Waterfalls
are one of the regions most beautiful natural attractions. They are set in the mountains above Benidorm and Altea, next to the town of Callosa d'en Sarria. The journey from Oliva can take between 45 minutes and an hour depending on which route you choose to take. The fastest route is using the E15/A7 motorway and heading inland at
the Altea exit, although the most scenic is

to take your time and traverse through mountains beyond Pego, enjoying the breath-taking scenery and fantastic mountain villages. En-route there are plenty of places to stop for a cool drink and to enjoy the views.
The turning down into Algar Falls can be slightly confusing, depending on which direction you arrive from, it is down into the

valley and not up. As you drop into the valley bottom there are numerous car parks on either side of the road. They all charge a fee although some are associated with one of the many restaurants on the stripand presenting the ticket after drinking or dining can reduce the bill slightly. Once parked take the short walk along the road as it rises up the other side of the valley . There are tourist stalls, photographers and market traders all along this route vying for your business.

Eventually you will
arrive at a wooden kiosk, this is the entrance to this beauty spot, you will have to pay a small fee to enter. Once through the gate there is a lovely walk up the side of the river Algar, with various stopping points for photos and information. The pools are incredibly clear and blue and the cascades are quite impressive.

Although we were here in November when it was too cold, there is access to some of the pools if you fancy a swim. I imagine in the heat of early summer when the river will still be flowing fairly rapidly this would be a fantastic experience. The children have an interesting time climbing over the rocks and exploring the one or two hidden caves along the trail.

Added to this being able to swim and dive into the pools or play under the falls, they will be entertained for hours. Also within the area there are toilets and a first aid post, use of the barbeques (including wood) and a camping area.
